After separate incidents…
REPUBLIC Bank driver Rudolph Persaud, 43, of Lot 32 Sheriff Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday, charged with manslaughter.
Particulars of the indictable charge said he unlawfully killed Yvette Francis last July 13.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, said the accused was driving motor vehicle PHH 5267 when it hit the victim, on leaving a fuel station.
The Prosecutor said the woman struck her head when she fell to the ground and was unconscious up to the time of death in hospital.
Persaud was put on $300,000 bail until December 1.
Another driver, Leon Bernard, an employee of International Pharmaceutical Agency (IPA), faced a charge of causing death by dangerous driving in the same Court.
He was also charged with breach of insurance and driving without a licence.
The most serious allegation against him is that, on November 9, he drove motor lorry GKK 379 in a manner dangerous to the public and caused the death of Grethel Lewis.
One of the other accusations against him said he drove the motor vehicle for which a third party risk insurance was not in force.
Bernard (no address given) pleaded not guilty, as well, to driving it when he was not licensed to drive a lorry.
Telford said Bernard was proceeding at a fast rate of speed when the vehicle struck Lewis on the pedestrian crossing in the city.
The Prosecutor had objected to bail for Bernard, on the grounds that the offence is a serious one and the accused failed to take into consideration that the victim was using the pedestrian crossing.
However, attorney-at-law Mr. Euclin Gomes submitted that Bernard is not responsible for the vehicle insurance as it should have been insured by his employer.
The lawyer also said there was no pedestrian crossing where the fatal accident occurred and Bernard was not speeding.
The Police objection was overruled and bail was granted in the sum of $300,000 before the case was put off to December 1.
