ONE brother fatally stabbed another in a drunken rage yesterday, following a quarrel over a cell phone, at Enmore North, East Coast Demerara. The victim Ganesh Nabi, 31, suffered the fatal injury inflicted with a broken bottle in the neck.
Farmer Rennie Gordon, who was tending to his nearby cultivation, told the Guyana Chronicle it happened shortly after 11:00 h.
He first heard a loud argument and, not long after, a commotion drew his attention and he saw the brothers fighting.
Gordon said the row surrounded a missing cell phone that belonged to Joseph Kaladin, also 31, bought by Nabi, who after being wounded, collapsed and bled to death in their father’s yard.
Kaladin, a father of two, lives in Berbice but was visiting his sibling, as usual, but Gordon said the visitor would always fight with Nabi over trivial matters.
The eyewitness said he had overheard Kaladin threatening to kill Nabi but did not believe it would happen because it was habitual for them to have confrontations.
Gordon told reporters yesterday that the men’s father and stepmother reside next door and they would, often, quarrel with the woman.
He said, when Kaladin did the stabbing, he ran out of the yard and went to a shop in the village but was apprehended by the Police, who responded quickly to the report.
The alleged killer is in custody and his stepmother was also assisting with the investigations.
Neighbours said the brothers are regular drinkers and would engage in rowdy arguments that would develop into fights.
