ONE of two mid-morning robberies was foiled yesterday after an employee of ‘Stretch D Dollar’ store alerted pubic-spirited citizens that her attacker was a thief and not a relative as he pretended. Kerry Boucher was walking along Strand, New Amsterdam, Berbice, about 08:30 h when one of two well dressed men approached her and attempted to steal her handbag.
At the time, the cashier was in the vicinity of Bank of Nova Scotia where she was going to do a transaction
An eyewitness vending nearby, who spoke on condition of anonymity, recalled seeing the unmasked robber attempt to grab the bag containing $200,000, with his accomplice a short distance away.
The supermarket employee shouted and, initially, persons were reluctant to go to her assistance because the man was saying she was his girlfriend who had his cellular phone and he wanted it.
The eyewitness said, after recalling a similar incident in Georgetown, where a person was robbed by a man who told bystanders that the victim was his wife, she joined the shouting for ‘thief’ and a security guard from a business place in the vicinity rushed to the woman’s aid, wrestled with the robber to the ground and handed him over to the Police.
Meantime, his accomplice was about to attack another victim who was driving but the driver stopped his vehicle and apprehended the would-be assailant, who is also now in Police custody, pending charges.
Manager of ‘Stretch D Dollar’, Mr. Rudolph Baird expressed gratitude to the public spirited citizens for their intervention.
He said it was not customary for his staff to go to the bank, as he would, usually, do so but was otherwise engaged and sent Boucher, who was so traumatised by the incident that she was allowed to return home.
