At Region Two Remembrance…

Samaroo laments continued suffering from World Wars loss
VICE-CHAIRMAN of Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Mr. Vishnu Samaroo told those attending the Remembrance Day Service, at Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast, last Sunday, that the world is still suffering from the agony of the two World Wars.
Noting that millions of lives were lost and millions more people were left handicapped, he reminded that the commemoration is about remembering and paying homage to all those who fought and died for their countries in the 1914 to 1918 and 1939 to 1945 wars.
Samaroo said the younger generation must be made aware of what took place in those two wars, because great suffering and loss of innocent lives represent some of the horrors and young people have to understand the meaning of Remembrance Day.
According to him, both the young and old fought and perished in the battles for one cause, peace.
He said it is recorded in history that, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in the year 1918, all fighting between the Allied Forces and the Germans ceased because an armistice or truce had been signed.
But it was decided that Remembrance Day will be observed in the second Sunday of November every year.
Samaroo said, today, the world is close to another war because of terrorist activities.
He said billions of dollars are being spent on weapons, especially ones, by some rich powerful nations and called on Guyanese and others worldwide to be peaceful and avoid conflict, live in unity and, at all times, condemn violence.
Wreaths were laid at the monument in the Anna Regina Town Council compound by Samaroo, Mayor Sammy Rampersaud and representatives of the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Guyana Fire Service (GFS) and the Department of Education.
Samaroo also took the salute at the march past by the Disciplined Services, witnessed by Member of Parliament (MP), Mr. Parmanand Persaud, former MP, Mr. Isahack Basir, Member of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), Mr. Pooran Persaud and Regional Executive Officer (REO), Mr, Sunil Singh, as well.
