Digicel Guyana Inc. renders support for National Schools Table Tennis tourney

WHAT began as a casual conversation between Commissioner of Police and president of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA), Henry Greene, and Digicel’s Chief Executive Officer Gregory Dean, yesterday culminated in the telecommunications giant donating the trophies and medals for the GTTA’s inaugural National Schools Teams’ Table Tennis Championships. The donation, which was not appraised at yesterday’s informal ceremony which was held in the Commissioner’s Office, Eve Leary, will go a long way in spurring the competitive spirit of the 19 teams that have so far confirmed their participation in the tournament which begins today and runs until Sunday at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
Digicel Guyana Inc.’s Events and Public Relations Manager, Ms Shonnet Moore said that it is but another example of Digicel’s commitment to the development of sports in Guyana and she referred to her company’s involvement in the National Schools’ Championships to buttress this statement.
Moore continued that since it is a schools’ championship, Digicel has also donated book vouchers that will be awarded to the first to third finishers in each category as well as the most outstanding and most improved players.
Moore related her company’s commitment to the event in saying that they are glad to be a part of the event and that they will continue to be a part in the future.
Greene said that he was very heartened by what transpired yesterday as the road that led to Digicel’s gesture began with a conversation which led to subsequent communication with the company’s CEO and the eventual donation. “I am happy to know that Digicel is willing to support youths in clean and healthy activity,” Greene related.
The GTTA president noted that the tournament has garnered a lot of interest from schools and he said that they will look to host a pee-wee category (U-10) next year.
