Rambrich feeling better, shooter arrested after Corentyne shooting

GUYANA Police Force (GPF) Public Relations Officer Ivelaw Whittaker said yesterday that investigations are ongoing into the shooting of Rice Producers Association (RPA) President Leekha Rambrich. The PRO confirmed that a 76-year-old man shot Rambrich after an argument over land and the Police recovered an unlicensed 12-gauge shotgun, three matching cartridges and a spent shell at the home of the shooter.
Rambrich suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the right side of his chest and his upper right arm Saturday morning, at Bengal, Corentyne, Berbice, where he was checking on his rice fields and his assailant has been arrested.
Rambrich, 49, who is a patient at Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), told the Guyana Chronicle that he never had any confrontation with the man.
He said he expects to be transferred to New Amsterdam Hospital today but, although not able to use his right hand, he is feeling somewhat better.
Rambrich said only two fingers on that hand can move and the GPH doctors advised him it may be another two weeks before he resume use of the limb.
He was, initially, taken to Port Mourant Hospital, Corentyne, where he was treated and sent on to New Amsterdam Hospital and put in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where he had surgery.
In addition to being president of the RPA, Rambrich is also a successful farmer cultivating 600 acres of rice and an executive member of the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce (CCCC).
