Collin ‘Mr Clean’ Chesney is GAPF’s new national heavyweight champ

LINDEN’S Collin ‘Mr Clean’ Chesney returned to the national scene with a bang as he claimed the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) heavyweight title at Sunday’s National Senior Powerlifting Championships which were held at the Critchlow Labour College. Chesney, who was challenged by two other lifters in the 125kg weight class ended the day with a total of 782.5kg under his belt, while Farouk Abdool lagged by 37.5 kg with his 745kg total, and Julius Sinclair came in third place with 660kg.
In giving his take on the performance Chesney remarked that it was a good day for him but not his best as he had an issue where his squatting suit malfunctioned and impeded his performance in that event.
Guyana’s new strongest man said that it was his intention to make his victory a milestone by being the first local to squat over 800lb but was hampered by a tear in his squat suit which he noted had taken a lot of energy out of him.
The 35-year-old has finally risen to the acme of his sport after his decade-long involvement with powerlifting, and it is even a more impressive feat when one considers that he has not been in any form of high level competition or done any heavy training during the three years hiatus he took from the local arena.
A full breakdown of the results was not readily available due to technical difficulties faced by the GAPF’s statistician but the federation has promised to release the information on the results of the individual categories and overall winning lifter to the media tomorrow.
