Three employees of Demerara Oxygen Company Limited (DOCOL) at Eccles, East Bank Demerara, were injured when an explosion rocked the premises yesterday afternoon.
DOCOL Chief Executive Officer, Shameer Hoosein, told reporters that there was an unexplained accident in the LPG (cooking gas plant) about 15:00h and three employees were injured.
They were rushed to a private institution where they are receiving medical treatment and their families are with them.
Hoosein said that DOCOL has always been big on occupational safety and health practices and as such they have invested heavily in their fire suppression system that is why there was no extensive damage at the plant.
The DOCOL CEO explained that before the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) arrived on scene they had managed to put the fire out.
He told reporters that he would have to wait on an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion and the extent of the damage to the plant.
Hoosein said that the incident will not affect production as back up equipment will be employed.
There will be no interruption in production, he said.
