Banks DIH Power Stout continues support of GPLF Senior Championships

… Greene promises that championships will be a spectacle
BANKS DIH Ltd continued over a decade’s worth of support for the Guyana Power Lifting Federation Senior National Championships, which is rendered through its recently renamed Power Stout brand name, when the company handed over the trophies for the event yesterday.

During the handing-over ceremony which was held in the company’s boardroom at Thirst Park, Sales and Marketing Executive at Banks DIH Carlton João related the good feeling of seeing results from the investments made in the local power lifters, noting that power lifting is one of the sports in the limelight at the moment.
João hailed the locals who have been performing well in the international arena and said that he is proud of the dedication he detected during his conversations with the lifters. “They speak of nothing but breaking records,” he remarked. He stated that his company’s commitment to supporting the federation remains paramount.
The president of the federation, Peter Greene, also spoke from the opposite end of the spectrum, saying that without the critical support of Banks DIH/Power Stout the association would not be as it currently is.
He even likened this notion to the athletes’ use of the product saying that its consumption plays a part in producing all of the international champions that the association fosters.
In reaching out to the fans of the sport Greene said to expect nothing but high level competition tomorrow as the lifters who claimed titles at the Caribbean Islands Championships as well as those who did the same at the Central American and Caribbean Games will be locked in battle for national honours.
He also addressed a few competitors who will be of interest tomorrow. He noted that Randolph Morgan and ‘Big John’ Edwards who are world champions in their respective categories will be guest-lifting at the event. Professional bodybuilder Sylvon Gardner will be stepping out of his discipline to take on the world’s #1-ranked lifter in the Masters 50-60 age category, Winston Stoby.
The Imammadeen brothers, Wazeem and Tariq, who were among the outstanding performers at the Caribbean Islands Championships, will also be in competition in the 140kg category. Dawn Barker who was identified as the first local female to squat 400lb is expected to make a return to competition while Farook Abdul stated his intention to break John Edwards’ bench press record.
The event which will take place at the Critchlow Labour College, Woolford Avenue, will begin at 10:00 h after the completion of the weigh-in and all other pre-competition activities will run from -08:00 h until competition time.
Greene revealed that the respective winners will make up the team that will represent Guyana at the 2011 Caribbean Islands Championships.
