President swears-in Public Service Commission members

Members of the new Public Service Commission yesterday took their oaths of office before President Bharrat Jagdeo at the Office of the President.The members are:- Ganga Persaud; Michael Desmond Hope; Vedyawattie Looknauth; Vera Naughton; Carvil Duncan and Cecil Seepersaud.The newly-constituted Commission will have its first meeting on Monday to press ahead with the work of the body, which includes promotions and disciplinary actions for public servants. In an invited comment, Minister of Public Service Dr. Jennifer Westford told the Chronicle she is very happy with the appointment of the commissioners.

(Sonnel Nelson photo) She said the process took longer than expected because there was a hiccup with one of the nominees, which led to the process of selection being restarted.
“We have lots of work to do. The Public Service Commission is very vital for appointments and discipline. We have lots of disciplinary issues to deal with,” the Minister said. “I hope that since they took their oath they will uphold all of the rules and regulations of the Commission and the Constitution and that the Public Service will be a better place,” she said.
Member of the Commission Mr. Ganga Persaud said the body will have “quite a number” of issues to deal with.
He noted that five of the six members have returned from the previous Commission to serve on the reconstituted body. He said, too, that the basic function of the commission is to make appointments to vacancies in the Public Service and also to make promotions. He said another role of the Commission is to see to the disciplining of persons in the Public Service.
The Commission will also look at superannuation benefits for members of the Public Service.
