A FIGHT between a husband and wife resulted in a cane harvester being sentenced to three months imprisonment and his wife placed on a bond for six months. The penalties were imposed on 51-year-old Arshad Kadir and Bibi Zira after they were convicted of assaulting each other.
After the couple pleaded guilty, the court heard that Kadir and Zira were at their Chesney Village home on October 4, when an argument arose and he took a wooden paling stave and lashed her several times about the body.
Kadir told Magistrate Tejnarine Ramroop, before whom they appeared in Albion Court, at Corentyne, that his wife had struck him with a mop stick.
The magistrate remarked that men are often afraid or ashamed to report instances of abuse and, although the woman was charged, she did not attend to hear the outcome of her case.
