COURTS (Guyana) yesterday donated $200,000 to Ruimveldt Children’s Aid Centre to help with its ‘Meal-A-Day’ feeding programme. The symbolic cheque was handed over on the ground floor of the Main Street, Georgetown store.
Member of the Local Management Committee of the beneficiary, Mr. Stuart May, who received the cheque, said the place is not a hostel but caters for disadvantaged children, by providing a building in which they could read books, play games and interact, among other things.
Those who operate the facility are United States (U.S.) Peace Corps volunteers and University of Guyana (UG) social work students.May said the money given by COURTS would fulfill the stated mission of offering one hot meal a day to the attending children, with emphasis being placed on it being a balanced and nutritious one.
He said the Centre is experiencing a challenging time and needs to find funding from other sources.
May said there is interaction with the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security but rather than being a copycat of what the Ministry is doing, the Centre is trying to fill a gap.
The non-profit institution, established in 1991, serves 150 underprivileged children who are abused either physically or mentally or both, children whose parents have neglected them due to economic circumstances and other disadvantaged ones.
