The Ministry of Public Works and Communications has been illuminating road corridors in densely populated areas in an effort to reduce road fatalities and enhance safety of road users. The Ministry recently awarded three contracts for the installation of street lights along the Corentyne Highway, Region Six in three areas: Stockholm to Crabwood Creek, Fyrish to Tain and New Amsterdam to Palmyra.
Traffic/ Safety Engineer Nigel Erskine stated that 190 photocell street lights will be installed along the 9.5 kilometre Stockholm to Crabwood Creek stretch at a cost of approximately $28M.
Meanwhile, 176 luminaries will be installed along the 8.8 kilometre Fyrish to Tain stretch at a cost of approximately $26M, and 114 street lights will be installed along the 5.7 roadway from New Amsterdam to Palmyra at a cost of approximately $17M.
He noted that the duration of the projects is four months and currently the contractor is mobilizing resources.
At the commencement of the year, street lights were installed along populated areas from Vreed-en-Hoop to Parika. Additionally, other areas on the West Bank Demerara road corridors were also illuminated.
