A pregnant woman, the wife of Port Kaituma businessman Farouk Ishmael, was yesterday beaten and robbed by three armed bandits who carted off $9M in cash and a quantity of raw gold. Police reported that at about 13:45hrs, three men held Jacqueline James, 36, at gunpoint at her home on Public Road, Port Kaituma, in the North West District.
They assaulted her and ran off with the cash and raw gold, but were cornered by policemen in a clump of bushes.
The bandits opened fire on the lawmen and Detective Corporal 16723 Winter was wounded in the hip.
Two of the robbers were caught by the police who recovered a .32 revolver and four live matching rounds of ammunition.
The pregnant woman was taken to the Port Kaituma Hospital for medical attention and is under observation, while the wounded police corporal was air dashed to the city and is at the Georgetown Public Hospital where his condition is regarded as stable.
Efforts are being made to arrest the third suspect as investigations are continuing.
