SHAM Khan has brought the momentum from winning the Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL)/ Topco Juices sponsored Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) national junior qualification tournament to the National Junior Championship where he has secured three wins and a draw from four games last Saturday.
Khan first defeated Carlos Petterson in the first round of the tournament which is being sponsored exclusively by Sasha Cells, before going on to shock the reigning junior champion Cecil Cox in round two where he came out victorious.
In the third round, he defeated Ryan McKay before being held to a draw by Raan Motilall in their fourth round matchup after being a knight up and was unable to secure a win.
In other results, Cox defeated Mc Kay, Ron and Raan Motilall played to a draw while Suhai Feng defeated Rashad Hussain in first round action.
In round two, Rashad Hussain bounced back from his first round loss to defeat McKay, even as Ron Motilall and Suhai Feng and Carlos Petterson and Raan Motilall all played to a draw while in round three, Raan Motilall and Cecil Cox played to a draw, while Petterson and Ron Motilall defeated Suhai Feng and Rashad Hussain respectively.
Round four action saw Ron Motilall defeating McKay, Hussain defeated Carlos Petterson, while Cox and Feng and Khan and Raan Motilall all played to a draw.
After four rounds of action, the points standing is as follows; Sham Khan (31/2 points), Ron Motilall (3), Raan Motilall, Suhai Feng, Cecil Cox and Rashad Hussain (2 points each), Carlos Petterson (1 ½) and while Ryan McKay is yet to score.
The tournament will continue today from 17:00h at the Keishar’s Sports Club, before returning to the Olympic House on Saturday for the final two rounds from 10:00h
