Moses to face T&T’s Allen in rematch
FINALLY, Guyana’s Mandessa Moses gets an opportunity to redeem herself when she faces Trinidad and Tobago’s Wendy Allen when the ninth edition of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC)/Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) Friday Night Fights (FNF) ProAm card punches off on the 29th of this month at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. In an earlier interview with Chronicle Sport, Moses said she always wanted to have another go at the Trinidadian who defeated her in her first professional fight last year.
The GBBC added international flavour to the ProAm card when Barbados’ based Shawn Cox matched gloves with Leon Gilkes in last month’s FNF and with the way things have been going for Moses, this fight will certainly set the tone for this year’s Boxing Day explosion that is being planned.
Following her defeat to Allen, Moses recorded victories over Alicia Marques, Sharon Warde and Margaret ‘Chico’ Walcott respectively, with Marques being beaten into oblivion. Former amateur stalwart Clive Atwell who was held to a draw by Mark Austin last month, will face Cecil Smith in a lightweight contest while Simeion Hardy who was prevented from making his professional debut against Gavin Williams also on last month’s card due to the doctor’s orders, will be doing so against Patrick Boston.
Austin will be looking to take his record to 4-1, when he faces Barbados based Revlon Lake in a lightweight encounter, following which Moses and Allen will do battle in a super lightweight fixture.
Apart from Moses, Allen, Lake, and Boston, the other pugilists were on hand to ink their names to the respective contracts last Tuesday afternoon in the office of president of the GBBC Peter Abdool.
Atwell promised his fans they will see the Atwell of “old”, in comparison to what they saw when he fought Austin, a bout he felt he won.
“Since the last fight, I never left the gym so you’ll see me in far better shape than the last time. It will be more like the Atwell of old,” he assured.
The Dominica based Atwell, who moved up to the 135lb class because of a shortage of opponents at his usual 119lb weight, lauded the GBBC for hosting the monthly cards and expressed pleasure of returning home to fight once the GBBC requests his participation.
Meanwhile, Atwell’s opponent for this month’s fight Smith who was defeated by Austin in his lone appearance on the FNF has expressed confidence of doing well, although he stayed clear of making any predictions.
“I’m working very hard for this fight. I’m training under coach Lennox Daniels at the moment. I just going out there to fight, no predictions!” Smith declared.
There will be four amateur fights for the evening, with the GABA releasing the names of the fighters shortly.
The GBBCGABA’s FNF ProAm monthly boxing card is being held in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS) and is aimed at giving exposure to the amateurs and enhancing the profiles of the professionals while at the same time, further develop the fistic sport.
The night’s action which will be broadcast live on NCN Channel 11 will commence at 20:00h with admission to the venue being $1,000.
