SOUTH Georgetown Old Students Association yesterday started the St. Stephen’s Primary After School Programme, in the Charlestown auditorium. President of the Guyana Chapter, Mr. Dwayne Nurse, said it will target 50 pupils from St. Stephen’s Primary, who will benefit from extra lessons during which they would be provided with snacks.
He said, together with the other chapter in the United States, they are seeking to put the school on track to become an ‘A’ grade institution. To accomplish the objective, Nurse said the alumni also plan to establish a computer laboratory, introduce a music programme and arrange vibrant sports activities at the alma mater, all in keeping with the goal of contributing positively to the education of children in the South Georgetown District.
He urged those present to reflect on how they, too, can contribute to the improvement of facilities at the school.
“You should challenge yourself to give positive service,” Nurse told the gathering, adding: “At the end of it, you can firmly stand and say: ‘I have done that’.”He said giving back and contributing positively is what the alumni grouping is all about.
In her remarks, St. Stephen’s Headmistress, Mrs. Janice Prescott expressed her gratitude to all the members of the benefactor organisation for their “tangible demonstration of kindness to the school.”
“I thank you for performing this noble task and for your interest in making a difference in the lives of the pupils,” she told them.
Acknowledging the benefits of such a gesture, Prescott called it a special gift which will put St. Stephen’s on the map.
The Association also donated, to the school, a sign depicting its logo.
