Rohee gives assurance of Government support to CPGs
MINISTER of Home Affairs, Mr. Clement Rohee on Wednesday afternoon witnessed the formation of the Middle Road, La Penitence Community Policing Group (CPG) in Georgetown.
Mr. Robert Wilbur (Chairman), Ms. Gloria Wade (Vice-Chairman), Ms. Anita Chang (Secretary), Mr. Chandra Persaud (Treasurer), Ms. Hermina Ramroop (Assistant Secretary/Treasurer) and five other elected members were installed.
The charge to them was delivered by Assistant Superintendent Rishi Das, representing the ‘A’ Division Commander.
Also from ‘A’ Division, Deputy Superintendent Frank Harvey welcomed the group into the CPG fraternity and spoke of the need for them to work hand in hand with the Police.
Chairman of ‘A’ Division CPG, Mr. Rawle Blyden was among others who made remarks on the occasion.
Administrator of the CPG Secretariat, Assistant Commissioner Ovid Glasgow reminded the group of their roles and functions and emphasised the objectives.
Rohee congratulated the elected officers on their initiative and encouraged them to help the Police fight crime, noting that CPGs have a lasting engagement.
He welcomed persons who band themselves together to form CPGs and assured that the Government is committed to establishing such groupings in every community.
The Minister told the gathering it would be good if CPGs could be established in every city ward and it is an aim.
He was, however, pleased that with the La Penitence CPG establishment which is the 43rd in ‘A’ Division and said it is a good achievement with respect to the size.
Rohee alluded to the policing challenges ‘A’ Division, which is considered the hub of business and commercial activities and where major installations are located.
Referring to criticisms that CPGs have lost purpose, he said he is not of that view because, in fact, they are making a contribution to the safety of communities in which they exist.
Rohee said, in the Caribbean region, Guyana may be the only country where the Central Government spends a lot of money on CPGs as the dedication and contributions of the persons are recognised.
He said it is not the intention of Government to abandon the CPGs but to support them and, as such, monthly meetings are held at his ministry.
“It is not correct for anyone to conclude that CPGs have lost their way,” he reiterated.
Rohee encouraged members of the new CPG to lead by example and let the community know of their existence and maintain their visibility in the area, so they can be recognised and win the confidence of residents.
He admonished the CPG not to abuse assets provided by his ministry and exhorted members not to bring the organisation into disrepute, reminding them that the vehicles made available are solely for specified use and, if found, at anytime, being used for personal or other purposes they will be taken away.
