PPP agrees on Presidential candidate selection process

THE People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has agreed on the procedure to select its Presidential candidate for the general elections due next year.

The party yesterday announced that the document, which was recently ratified, reinforces its “longstanding and tested procedure on the selection of a Presidential candidate”.

“The procedure allows for nomination/expression of interest by interested individuals, deliberations at the level of the Executive Committee and subsequent approval by the Central Committee. The approved candidate will then be announced to the membership through regional conferences”, it said in a statement.

It noted that this process was used in the selection of the late Dr. Cheddi Jagan, Mrs. Janet Jagan and current President Bharrat Jagdeo to contest previous general elections.

The PPP, the major partner in the current PPP/Civic government, said the document also outlines a code of conduct which potential Presidential candidates and their supporters must adhere to before and after the selection of the agreed on Presidential candidate.

The PPP, ousted from government in 1964 through external machinations, survived almost 30 years in opposition and returned to power under the PPP/Civic umbrella at the historic October 5, 1992 general elections.

The October 1992 polls were internationally sanctioned as free and fair and marked the restoration of democracy in this country.

The PPP/C has won general elections since then in 1997, 2001 and 2006.
