Mother fails to save drug convict from imprisonment

HIS mother’s plea yesterday failed to save Seeram Ramjattan alias ‘Sheriga’, 28, from a three years jail sentence, that was imposed on him by Magistrate Tejnarine Ramroop, at Albion Court, Corentyne, Berbice.
The prisoner suffered the custodial punishment on conviction for possession of narcotics.
He was cycling along Belvedere Public Road, Corentyne, when Police Rural Constable Raghubir, on bicycle patrol with others, stopped and searched him and found a grease proof paper parcel containing leaves, seeds and stems of the cannabis (marijuana) plant and cocaine in his left hand.
At Rose Hall Police Outpost, Corentyne, the drugs were weighed and found to be half gramme of marijuana and one gramme cocaine.
In Court yesterday, Surujdai Latchman pleaded for her son not to be imprisoned but fined and ordered to do community service.
But the magistrate told her:”Madam, I am not here to send people to prison but to impose stipulations  based on the law. According to the law governing narcotics, the minimum sentence is three years for the amount of cocaine he confessed to have had in his possession. I am bound by the law.”
The prisoner was also fined $10,000 with the alternative of six months imprisonment for the marijuana and he has to do two months community service.
