A 28-year-old man, on his way to the gold mining interior in search of a job, failed to reach his destination after the bus in which he was travelling en route to Parika crashed on the East Bank Essequibo Public Road early yesterday morning.
Carl Austin of 114 Foulis, East Coast Demerara, and formerly of Mabaruma, North West Region, is now warded at the Georgetown Public Hospital nursing a fractured collar bone, injuries to his right shoulder and four fractured fingers, among other things.
When visited by this newspaper, The Amerindian man was experiencing excruciating pain , but managed to relate what happened.
Austin who said that he was booked to travel to Tamakay, Mazaruni River, early yesterday morning, via the Interior River Quest Jet Boat Transportation Service , recalled that some time after 2:30 hrs he joined a 15-seater shuttle minibus at the regular pick up point, near Crown Mining Enterprise on North Road, to travel to Parika.
He said he was very sleepy and soon dozed off , only to be awakened by the impact of the accident.
“All I remember is that I wake up when the bus flip into the air and landed on the side, and keep skidding for a good distance.” Having occupied a seat next to an open window at the right rear of the bus, he suffered injuries to his right shoulder.
Austin recalled that about six other persons were injured and they were all rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where they were stabilized before being transferred to the Georgetown Hospital.
