Remanded prisoner had illegal gun, ammo in minibus
EARL Nieuenkerk, of Lot 84 Blueberry Hill, Wismar, Linden, who was nabbed in a minibus at a roadblock on Tuesday, was remanded to prison yesterday on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. Before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry, he pleaded not guilty to having, on September 14, one 9mm pistol, a total of 37 matching rounds and two magazines without licences for them.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, whose objection to bail for the defendant was upheld, said the vehicle in which Nieuenkerk was travelling was stopped on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
The Prosecutor said the defendant pushed a black plastic bag under his seat and the gun and 15 rounds were found inside.
Telford said the defendant was arrested taken to his home where more ammunition was discovered in his presence.
Nieuenkerk has to make his next Court appearances at Christianburg, Linden on September 21 and Providence, East Bank Demerara, on October 1.
