STAFF of Demerara Bank last evening staged a twilight vigil in the city, as a mark of respect and in memory of their colleague, 21-year old Sheema Mangar, who was tragically killed last Friday, while returning home from work.
Mangar, of 675 Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, struck down by a motor vehicle in which a man who snatched her Blackberry cellular phone and escaped, was, at the time of her death, employed at Demerara Bank, as Cashier in the Treasury Department.
The mood was somber last evening as the bereaved workmates, senior and junior staff alike, carrying lanterns, converged outside the Bank, then at 18:00 hrs, quietly moved off, slowly walking north along Camp Street to the point at which she was struck down and dragged for several feet, close to Church Street.
In commemoration of the late employee, a cross was planted at the spot where her body fell, after which the procession slowly returned to the bank. Departmental Manager Sonia Mc Curdy, who coordinated that initiative, noting that Mangar was a very quiet and private person, said that the commemoration vigil was being observed in the same spirit, with no formalities such as speeches or addresses.
The silence and heart breaking mood of the employees throughout the approximate 45 minutes said it all, with onlookers intermittently commenting how sad the occasion was.
