In Region Two…
COORDINATOR of Hinterland Affairs in the Ministry of Regional Development and Local Government, Mr. Harripersaud Nokta has inspected solar electrification projects in the Tapakuma Amerindian community last Wednesday.
Accompanied by Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) Vice-Chairman, Mr. Vishnu Samaroo and Regional Chairman of Region Three (West Demerara/Essequibo Islands), Mr. Julius Faerber, he made an inspection of the solar powered well and tested the pressure of water flowing through one of the five public standpipes in the community.
Toshao of Tapakuma, Mrs. Doreen Jackobus told Nokta that the new well is a boost, in terms of development and residents are very thankful to the Government for the project.
She said every house in the village is equipped with a 65 watts solar panel that supplies electricity.
Nokta said the Government has installed 71 solar panels in houses and Government buildings in the community and he is happy that students now have access to bright lights to study at nights.
Jackobus pointed out that householders can play radios and small tape recorders with the solar current and the village is brightly lit at nights when residents put on their lights.
Nokta said Government wants to equip every Amerindian community with solar power and 1,000 panels will be installed before year end.
Tapakuma is the third Amerindian village to benefit from solar energy, the others being Capoey and Mashabo, in Region Two, as well.
Regional Development Officer, Mr. Daneshwar Gangoo and member of the Region Two Regional Democratic Council (RDC), Mr. Omesh Oditt were in the visiting party, too.
