ANN Abigail Arthur, a management student at the University of Guyana, Friday appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson charged with causing death by dangerous driving. The charge against Arthur, 34, of 2750 Park Lane, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, said on August 23 last, at Providence, East Bank Demerara, she drove motor car PLL 2595 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Dindyal Chetram.
Arthur, an employee at the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) Income Tax Office, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, told the court that the defendant was speeding on the roadway and that the deceased was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
However, lawyer for Arthur, Neil Bollers, claimed that the deceased was responsible for his own death. He said Chetram was in the middle of the road when he was hit down and that the Police failed to make this known to the court.
Arthur was granted $200,000 bail and will return at Providence court on October 29.
Fifty-six-year-old Chetram of Lot 6 First Street, Grove, East Bank Demerara, was a pedestrian on the day in question and was attempting attempted to cross the road when he was struck down.
