-says Caribbean should acknowledge quality of Guyana’s work
PRIME Minister of St Lucia, Mr. Stephenson King last week had a first-hand experience of the high quality of Guyana’s products; and he later made it clear he was “very impressed” with what he saw.
Escorted by Guyana’s Labour Minister Mr. Manzoor Nadir, the St. Lucian PM visited the Guyana Furniture Manufacturing Limited (GFML) on the East Coast of Demerara and Pritipaul Singh Investment Inc on the East Bank of Demerara.
Prime Minister King was exposed to locally made furniture including doors, windows, flooring and ceiling, which were made of various types of wood from Guyana’s forest, particularly greenheart.
Pritipaul Singh Investment Inc is the largest harvester, processor and exporter of chilled quality seafood including shrimp and fish.
Minister Nadir stated that this was an opportunity for the PM to view the activities that citizens have been participating in to boost the country’s economy.
He added that this is an opportunity to showcase to foreign countries the potential of Guyanese, as well as the country.
Minister Nadir highlighted that this will promote good relations among CARICOM countries.
Prime Minister King stated that he was very impressed with the standard of operations and the efficiency that is practiced in the country and that he would like the Caribbean to acknowledge the quality of work that takes place in Guyana.
He was impressed with the quality and finish of the wood at the GMFL, especially, and commended the owners for their efforts to make the operation successful.
Proprietor and Managing Director, Mr. Pritipaul Singh, noted how pleased he was that the Prime Minister of another country took the time to come and visit his business and, as such, he was happy to let him observe the services provided to the Caribbean and the world in terms of seafood products.
He also extended an offer for business relations with St. Lucia’s Fish Marketing Corporation.
Director of GFML, Dinesh Singh said the company caters for low income market and various technologies are used to manufacture good quality wood.
The company exports lumber to countries including Barbados and Grenada.
“Greenheart is the most prominent in the country’s forest and the lifespan of the wood is over 100 years,” Singh emphasised, as he made reference to the St. George’s Cathedral, which is made of greenheart and still stands after 100 years. (GINA)
