SKIPPER Zaheer Mohammed grabbed a T20 career best 6-13 to destroy Georgetown Pitbulls batting line up while guiding his team to a comfortable five wicket victory at the Guyana National Stadium Providence last Sunday.
Winning the toss and opting to bat in hazy conditions, the Leon Johnson led Pitbulls (GCA) side slipped to 21-3 inside the fourth over before they were bowled out for 105 from 18.5 overs thanks to Mohammed’s 6-13.
In reply, the Jaguars reached 110-5 from 19.1 overs to complete the win and at the same time avenge their loss in the Guyana Cricket Board/Digicel T20 tournament to the same opponents two months ago, with Mohammed being unbeaten on 30.
Jamal Hinckson (46; 6×4, 1×6) and Dion Ferrier (16) fought fire with fire following the demise of Shemroy Barrington (02), Trevon Griffith (12) and Leon Johnson (02), as they added 33 for the fourth wicket.
Hinckson struck Surujpaul Deosarran (2-18) who opened the bowling with Imran Khan (1-25) through midwicket twice for four, while Ferrier drove Videsh Lall through extra cover for another boundary.
Another boundary struck straight down the ground by Hinckson off Lall pushed the score to 50-3 in the 10th over, before the introduction of skipper Zaheer Mohammed accounted for Ferrier who was caught at the wicket by Joseph Perry for 16.
Hinckson responded to the loss of Ferrier by hitting Singh for a four, followed by a six over midwicket before Rawle Browne (02) who had replaced Ferrier was bowled followed by Dillon Heyliger (00) who was lbw, both to Mohammed at 69-6 in the 13th over.
Troy Gonsalves was run out by the full length of the pitch after Hinckson refused a call for a quick single, while national Under-19 left arm swing bowler Andre Stoll (04) offered Mohammed who was unplayable, a simple return catch.
Trevon Garraway (10) added 22 for the ninth wicket with Hinckson, before they were both removed by Mohammed in the 19th over to close off the innings, with Garraway going via the lbw route and Hinckson being caught by Chris Patadin.
Patadin (23; 3×4) and Ryan Ramdass (24; 3×4) started things for the Jaguars, with the former hitting both Garraway and Stoll for four followed by another boundary off Heyliger who had replaced Stoll.
The introduction of Ferrier who took 3-16, resulted in the demise of Patadin who was lbw at 37-1 in the eight over, following which the Jaguars’ 50 was posted in the 10th over when Ramdass struck Ferrier through point for his third four.
Ferrier had a double strike in his third over, removing Wasim Haslim (11) and Ramdass, but a six struck by Mohammed straight back over the head of Johnson, carried the Jaguars to 79-3 at the end of 16 overs.
Jaguars reached their 100 in the 19th over, courtesy of Mohammed’s boundary to fine leg off Stoll and it was all over bar the shouting for the Pitbulls who were toothless against the ferocious Jaguars, when Mohammed struck Griffith back over his head for six off the first ball of the final over.
