A taxi driver was yesterday remanded to prison on two charges of causing death by dangerous driving.
Bahardo Parbatties, 24, of 799 New Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson and was not required to plead to the indictable charges, which stated that on August 28, at Friendship, East Bank Demerara, he drove motor car PGG 1260 in a manner dangerous to the public and caused the death of Bibi Doliviera. Also, on the same day, he drove the car in a manner dangerous to the public and caused the death of Noland Doliviera.
The prosecutor had no objection to bail, but requested a substantial amount.
However, the magistrate denied bail and transferred the matter to Providence court for September 6.
A Chronicle report stated that the deceased were husband and wife and were on their motor cycle when they were struck down by the driver of the motor car who allegedly lost control of the vehicle.
Mrs. Doliviera died at the scene while her husband was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital and later died from his injuries.
Reports are that the couple, who were Jehovah’s Witnesses, had just concluded a bible study at a Kingdom Hall located in the vicinity of Friendship and were returning home when tragedy struck.
