$350,000 bail for causing death by dangerous driving accused

CHRISTOPHER Rogers, charged with causing the death of a 20-year-old man by dangerous driving last Saturday, made an appearance in court yesterday and was released on bail.
Rogers, of 1894 North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was not required to plead to the charge when he appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton.
It is alleged that, on August 21 last, at Nelson Mandela Avenue, he drove motor car PLL 6787 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Christopher Crawford.

Rogers was placed on $350,000 bail and this matter will continue on September 30.
On Wednesday last, Rogers pleaded guilty before the same magistrate to a charge of having an uninsured motor vehicle.
Particulars of this offence said, on August 21, he drove the vehicle when there was not in force a policy of insurance with respect to third party risk.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, informed the court that the defendant was driving south along the eastern side of Mandela Avenue when he was involved in an accident.
Telford said after Rogers was arrested for this offence, the officers found that the certificate had expired.
He related that the causing death matter could not be called at the same time because the police officer that was supposed to swear to the matter did not write a comprehensive report.
Attorney-at-law Hukumchand represented Rogers and told the court Wednesday that the vehicle his client was driving belonged to a friend who assured him that the documents were in order.
The lawyer said Rogers admits negligence in not checking to make sure that this was so and that he was therefore throwing himself at the mercy of the court.
Rogers was fined $35,000 with an alternative of six months in jail.
Crawford, of Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, died as a result of the accident that occurred aback of the Botanic Gardens and the drivers of both vehicles had to be hospitalized subsequent to serious injuries.
Crawford reportedly left his home for an evening out with friends and was a passenger in a Toyota Allex, PLL 6787, when he met his demise.
Reports are that the vehicle in which Crawford was travelling and another motor car , prior to the accident, were speeding.
Crawford died when the Toyota Allex collided with a CRV vehicle, number PHH 2814 belonging to John Fernandes Limited and driven by Shawn Gonsalves.
Ranks of the Fire Service, on arrival on the scene of the accident, were reportedly forced to cut open the door of the Toyota Allex to get to Crawford who was pinned in the car.
