THE Guyana Police Force has announced the operation of a new minibus zone in the Berbice area with effect from Monday August 30, 2010.
The new route will operate in No.56 Village and has been approved by the relevant authority, a statement from the Guyana Police Force said.
It added that minibuses plying the new route would operate between Rosignol and New Amsterdam and utilise the corresponding terminals at the Rosignol and New Amsterdam Ferry Stellings.
Consequently, the Road Service Licence of the No.50 minibus zone has been amended to stop at the Rosignol Stelling, while the No.63 route has been amended to stop at the New Amsterdam Ferry Stelling.
Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee and Minister of Transport and Hydraulics Robeson Benn had met with the members of the Berbice Minibus Association in June to discuss the new route.
The Association had previously met with President Bharrat Jagdeo where Chairman, Dennis Chesney related that a new bus route plying Rosignol/D’Edward/New Amsterdam was necessary to replace the ferry service from Rosignol to Georgetown and to prevent zone trespassing by minibuses plying other routes. The Association had also requested bus parks, at the two ends of the route.
The 63A plies Georgetown to Moleson Creek, the 50, Georgetown to Rosignol and the 63, Corriverton to New Amsterdam.
Minister Rohee said the administration’s concern is two-fold: the well-being of the travelling public and the maintenance of discipline within the association to ensure this wellbeing.
Ultimately, a series of measures were agreed upon including the cost to commuters remaining the same and the introduction of wardens to ensure discipline at park points.
