‘She does not have a chance’ – Moses
“I AM looking for a convincing win on all the judges’ card at the end of each round. I am training hard; in fact very hard for this fight. My conditioning is great and, taking into consideration my physical feelings at the moment, she does not have a chance against me.”
Those were the words of 21-year-old Friendship, East Bank Demerara resident and former Soesdyke High School student Mandessa Moses who will be going up against Linden’s Sharon Ward next Friday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).
The two female pugilists will be meeting in the main bout of the seventh edition of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBC)/Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport-organised Friday night ProAm fights.
What is of importance with regard to both boxers is the fact that they both have back-to-back wins on the same promotion that is being used by both the GBBC and GABA as a means to revive the fistic sport locally.
While that is something Moses herself realises, she informed Chronicle Sport that no stone will be left unturned as she makes her climb towards achieving her goal, which is to one day emulate her countrywoman and present Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) bantamweight champion Shaundell Alfred.
“When I fought ‘Chico’ Walcott in my last fight which I won, I was surprised as I thought she (Walcott) would have brought to the ring a more positive attitude, knowing that she is far more experienced than I was.
“Added to that, she has fought some of the best on the local scene and while I did win that fight, I was not happy with the way she performed and I am hoping and praying that Ward can bring a better fight to me this time around,” stated Moses.
The soft-spoken female, who once dabbled with karate before turning to boxing where her professional record reads 3-1 following her debut loss to Trinidad and Tobago’s Wendy Allen last year, said she is prepared to handle and counter anything Ward throws at her.
“Unlike Walcott, I hope and pray Sharon is coming to fight. I am on a high following my devastation of Alicia Marques and I am eagerly looking forward to show the boxing public, the true Mandessa Moses.
“I thought that Walcott would have helped me do so, based on her experience, but as I said, I was disappointed as to me she did not want to fight as she held onto me more instead of throwing her punches.
“Whatsoever Sharon is bringing, it better be good as there will be no mercy along with a no-holds-barred attitude by me when I face her. I have seen her in action and I know I can handle and counter-attack anything she brings to the ring next Friday night.”
“It will be the main bout. For the first time in my short but productive career, I am being given the opportunity to headline a card, even though it is four rounds and I would like to give the fans a wonderful performance for their money on that night.”
When asked if she would be knocking Ward out, seeing that she is eager to repeat her performance against Marques, Moses said she would be comfortable with a convincing win, but if a knockout comes her way, she would accept it on a silver platter.
“I think Ward should take me seriously. If she has been looking past her previous opponents, she needs to think twice when it comes to me. I am no pushover. I am willing to take what she has to offer and give her some of mine.
“To date, I have chalked up three victories since my loss to Allen and certainly, I will be looking to make it four out of four and as I said before, anyone who wishes to stop me, can find themselves in a rocky place, as I don’t intend to go down the path of losing easily,” stated Moses.
Whether or not she has inked her name on the dotted lines for a fight, Moses makes her way down to the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis gym in Albouystown on a daily basis, where she works out with intense training leading up to fights.
Even though her fight is one week away, Moses has already commenced winding down her preparations at the gym where she can be seen every afternoon from 15:00 h under the guidance of her coach.
