Austin to face Trotman in seventh edition of GBBC/GABA ProAm Fights

… King and Gilkes in rematch
HAVING recorded impressive victories over Cecil Smith and Shawn Pile respectively, Young Achievers Boxing Gym’s Mark Austin will match gloves with Errol Trotman when the seventh edition of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC)/Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) Friday night ProAm fights punches off on  August  27 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The two boxers inked their names to the respective contracts yesterday in the boardroom of Abdool and Abdool Insurance Brokers Limited, which also saw Theophilus ‘Blue’ King sign to face Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes in a heavyweight rematch.
Also signing to fight yesterday were Mandessa Moses who will be facing Linden’s Sharon Warde in a catchweight encounter and Dexter Marques who will be going up against Rudolph Fraser in a featherweight bout.
However, the match-up which should set tongues wagging in three weeks time can be the Austin/Trotman affair, where it was the latter who sent the challenge to the former while he was engaged in his bout against Pile.
During the second round of that match which Austin won impressively, Trotman said he was willing to take on the winner, since he feels he can defeat both of them consecutively.
However, at the contract-signing ceremony yesterday, Trotman asked Austin to lose weight (approximately 10lb) to meet him to which Austin promised that the most he will be losing is three pounds, as the last time he lost weight, his opponent refused to match gloves with him.
Moses has been having an impressive run in the ProAm fights to date where she recorded a stunning technical knockout over Alicia Marques – of whom not much has been heard of lately – followed by a unanimous victory over Margaret ‘Chico’ Walcott.
But Warde has been making a name for herself in this promotion, which is being used to revive the sport on the local scene, with a convincing victory of her own over the much younger Kwinda Rogers, which would make her battle with Moses an interesting one.
The King/Gilkes fight can be used to settle the score between the two pugilists who are buddies out of the squared circle.
They met in the fourth edition of the Friday Night Fights (FNF), where Gilkes walked away with a unanimous decision victory over King who was making his debut, but has vowed to avenge the loss.
Gilkes, who can best be described as the ‘prodigal son’ of professional boxing here in Guyana’ will be looking to redeem himself also, following his surprise defeat at the hands of Anthony ‘Six Pack’ Augustine.
With the hype and entertainment given to the last edition of the FNF by the pugilists on show, including Debbie Tyson and Pauline London, boxing fans will be looking to see same once again when the seventh edition punches off in three weeks time at Guyana’s lone indoor venue.
