THE Kaieteur News is at it again, with its recent attack on the GRA, what stands out is the extent to which Mr. Sattaur, the head of the organisation is frequently at the receiving end of not just reporting, as he has complained, but contemptuously vilified in columns of the newspaper. The newspaper has consistently demonstrated a derisive attitude towards him especially when they cannot get their way.
Mr. Sattaur is held to a higher standard of responsibility, since he is responsible for the collection of 70 per cent of the revenue for this country on behalf of the government and people of Guyana, and therefore he should not be bullied into answering every question posed to him by reporters, from that news outfit or any other newspaper which no locus standi to criticise him.
He has to be very careful about his answers, because he is also sworn to secrecy and cannot be discussing taxpayers business in public. When the newspaper cannot get its way, they resort to road shop drinking corners with staff from the GRA to discuss not only GRA’s business, but members of staff personal business, which when printed, the newspaper is most times written to in the form of press releases to correct the misinformation. Despite these releases they would never apologise for the misinformation, but would add and put another angle to justify what was published.
I know the rudeness and arrogance to which Mr. Sattaur as head of the GRA has been subject to by certain sections of the press, who until this day seems to cherish a distaste for civilised behaviour, because the newspaper badly wants to be seen as a champion for getting the news first.
In the Caribbean you do not hear about or know who are the tax bosses, much less to call them to ask questions. However, Mr. Sattaur has led the way by opening up the Revenue Authority to the media with his frequent appearances on television and radio which no other head has ever done in the history of the Inland Revenue and GRA.
The Kaieteur News will do a good service to themselves, if it refocuses its attention to addressing their journalistic standards which continue to drop tremendously, and credibility is one issue the newspaper should try to stay away from since I am sure many of their reporters do not file returns or pay their income tax, since they continue to do a disservice to the profession of journalism.
