AS a result of the withdrawal of the services of contractors, who collect garbage in Georgetown, there have been meetings with the Mayor and City Council (M&CC), the Private Sector Commission (PSC), the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) and the Ministries of Local Government and Works. This withdrawal of services by the contractors which began on June 21 last was due to the Council’s inability to meet outstanding payments.
In an effort to relieve the crisis, the five entities are working collaboratively to bring some relief to residents and businesses and to improve the aesthetics of the City, which have been significantly affected. And so the PSC and Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) have committed to making trucks available while the Ministries will assist with the needed equipment to complement the work being done by the Council.
The PSC and GCCI have sourced five trucks and drivers from the Guyana Scrap Metal Dealers Association which began garbage collection on Saturday last, the PSC said in a release yesterday.
M&CC has embarked on the collection of household garbage, trying to maintain the schedule, though this will be fortnightly where it used to be weekly and once weekly where it was twice weekly.
The City Council still continues to face financial difficulties but is making every effort to arrive at a solution with the contractors and to examine its financial situation to determine whether schedules could be to be reviewed.
