– GPL confirms
The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Incorporated, in its efforts to regularise power supply to specific areas in Georgetown, has managed to establish an alternative temporary link between the Wartsila plant at Garden of Eden and the grid. This arrangement allowed for two machines at the plant, with the capacity of 11MW, to be returned to service.
Further, the power company advised that new cables are being procured to correct the problem. The available capacity in Demerara is at present 78MW. However, this availability may increase or decrease during various periods.
On Wednesday evening, there was a failure of a power cable connecting two machines at the Garden of Eden Wartsila plant to the grid.
Attempts were made to establish an internal link which would allow one of the affected machines to return to service, but this attempt encountered expected difficulties. While this exercise was being conducted, the available capacity in Demerara was 58.2MW (megawatts) as the evening peak approached.
As a result of the depreciated level of electrical generation, power supply to consumers in North, South, East and West Ruimveldt, Festival City, Roxanne Burnham Gardens, Tucville, Guyhoc Gardens and Park and Shirley Field Ridley Square was affected from 17:33h to 20:22h.
