Ex-GPL employee charged with meter fixing fraud

COLIN Boyce, 24, of Murphy Street, Good Intent, West Bank Demerara, was yesterday charged, before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, with attempting to commit a misdemeanor.
The indictable charge alleged that, last March, the accused obtained $180,000 from Nandani Ramnandan, by falsely pretending to be a Guyana Power & Light (GPL) employee.

The virtual complainant told the Court that, on March 6 Boyce went to her Norton Street, Georgetown home, posing as an employee of GPL and telling her that her meter had been tampered with and she would be arrested.
The woman said Boyce promised her that, if she gave him $180,000, she would not have to go to the Police station.
She said, subsequently, she went to GPL to clear her account and officials advised her that Boyce was no longer in their employ.
Ramnandan said, another day, Boyce called and said he would fix her meter if she gave him $70,000 and he was caught in a trap after GPL alerted the Police.
Boyce was put on 175,000 bail until July 30.
