11th ISKF Pan Am Championships

Support begin to pour in for GKC
WITH the opening ceremony of the 11th International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF) Pan American Karate championships just over a month away, support for the Guyana Karate College (GKC) the host of the tournament has begun to pour in from corporate Guyana .
The financial wheel of sponsorship began turning last week, when Geddes Grant (Guyana) Limited, Queensway Store and Scotia Bank threw their support behind the GKC who along with the Government of Guyana will be hosting the August 12-15 tournament.

However, while the GKC expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the three contributors, the cost for hosting the tournament is a very high one, when one looks at the number of karatekas who will be attending the championships.

“There will be 500 karatekas from 21 countries converging in Guyana for these championships and at the moment we are looking at a huge budget” stated Sensei Jeffrey Wong, the chief instructor of the GKC.

“While we appreciate what the three donors have given to us, we are still a long way off from our initial target, hence we are appealing to corporate Guyana to offer their support.

Our aim is to make this championship one of the best ever and we can only do so with the aid of sponsors, hence our appeal to corporate Guyana, together we can make it happen.”

Meanwhile, Wong informed Chronicle Sport that the GKC students preparations for the championships has been going great to date, especially with their out of town training they have been undergoing.

“Our preparation has been going great. All the karatekas are looking forward to these championship with a view of performing to the best of their ability, making all and sundry proud of them.”
