Driver involved with policeman road death remanded

Facing several charges…
THE driver of one of the vehicles involved in the recent accident that claimed the life of a policeman faced several charges yesterday.
Walraven Joseph, 20, of Lot 96 Regent Street, Georgetown, is charged with being unlicensed to drive, driving under the influence of alcohol and without a third party risk insurance.

He appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson and pleaded not guilty to all the offences.
Particulars of them said, on June 22, at Pearl, East Bank Demerara, he drove motor car PKK 5014 without the insurance, when his breath alcohol level exceeded the limit and he was not the holder of a driver’s licence.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, successfully objected to bail for Joseph, stating that the defendant drove the car at a fast rate and crashed into another vehicle which resulted in the death of the cop.
The Prosecutor said, after the fatality, a test was conducted and it revealed that the defendant had .088 per cent of alcohol in his system when the law permits .0035 per cent.
Telford asked that the Court consider the seriousness of the offences said it is likely that the defendant would flee the jurisdiction if allowed pre-trial liberty.
The Prosecutor added that another charge, of causing death by dangerous driving, is likely to be instituted against the defendant as investigations are ongoing.
Joseph was remanded to prison and the case will be called, again, on July 7.
Policeman Sherwin Denny, 44, was killed in the crash.
