Alleged Police beating witness on false information charge

COLIN Martin, 20, of Lot 169 Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday, charged with giving false information to the Police.
He pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which said, last June 2, at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), he gave, in writing, information  knowing it be false and would cause injury and annoyance to Carol De Viera and others.

Defence Counsel Nigel Hughes said the defendant witnessed a recent incident after which a person died and saw when other persons, including a Police officer, beat the victim days before he was found dead at a location on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
Hughes said Martin indicated, to the Police, what he had seen and made a statement but, later, recanted from it because of threats.
The lawyer said the findings of the first post mortem examination on the deceased were that he succumbed to multiple injuries but the second revealed that the injuries were not consistent with them having been suffered in a road accident.
Hughes said the dead man was taken to an alleged accident scene but Martin was at a different location because of fear for his safety.
The defendant was put on $30,000 bail until August 20.
