Two policeman charged in false number plates case
TWO Police Corporals and a civilian have been jointly charged with fraudulent imitation of a motor vehicle identity.
The policemen, Darrel Archer, 31, of Lot 168 Dacama Circle, Mackenzie, Linden and Rockwell Scarder, 22, of lot 41 Bagotville, West Bank Demerara appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson when it was reported that the third man, Donald Franklyn has not yet been arrested.
The joint indictable charge said the trio, on December 14, 2009, used identification number PKK 7432 and PKK 1782 on one motor car.
Archer and Scarder, represented by Defence Counsel Adrian Thompson, were remanded to prison and the case was transferred to Lethem Court, in Rupununi, for September 7.
The lawyer said the matter is related to a vehicle which was found, by Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) in the yard of the late Minister in the Ministry of of Education, Dr. Desrey Fox.
Thompson claimed the cops were only passengers in the vehicle when they were arrested and had nothing to do with the changing of number plates.
The lawyer said it is a waste of time charging them because they are not aware of what transpired and are still, presently, on active duty.
Thompson requested that the accused be released on their own recognisances or reasonable bail.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, had no objection to the grant and said Franklyn is a mechanic who was, allegedly, given the identification plates to change.
The Prosecutor said, based on information received, the vehicle was parked in the yard of the late Minister when GRA discovered the false number plates.
However, the magistrate refused the duo pre-trial liberty.
