Motorcyclist dies after crashing into street lamp

A 50-year-old motorcyclist was yesterday killed on the spot in an accident on the Houston Public Road, East Bank Demerara.
Dead is Kenneth Mitchell of Barnwell Mocha/Arcadia, also on the East Bank of Demerara.
Eyewitnesses said that around 13:30 h, Mitchell was riding east along the main thoroughfare when he attempted to overtake a motor vehicle in the vicinity of the Houston bridge and crashed head-on into the steel base of a street lamp.
Mr. Leonard Brower, who witnessed the accident, recalled that on impact, Mitchell was flung off his cycle and landed heavily on the roadway, even as his motorcycle continued skidding several feet ahead of him before coming to a stop.
Persons who rushed to the scene did not immediately attempt to get the victim to hospital, but summoned the police and awaited their arrival.
Mitchell reportedly breathed his last before the arrival of the police.  His body is currently at the Lyken Funeral Parlour.
