Orthotics and Prosthetics – Involves the use of various materials such as plaster, plastic, metal and leather to manufacture all types of orthotic and prosthetic appliances.
The process involves measuring, designing, fabricating, assembling, fitting and finally teaching the correct usage of the orthotic or prosthetic appliance.
Prosthetics – This is the science that deals with the addition of artificial parts to support the defect of the body e.g. amputation cases when artificial limbs are required.
A Prosthetic Technician – Is the person who manufactures and fits the prosthetic limbs.
Orthotics – Is a brace that is fabricated for patients to do the following:
• support body weight
• prevent and correct deformities
• control involuntary movement
The sole facility that is responsible for providing the public with the above mentioned devices is the Orthotics and Prosthetic Workshop at the Ptolemy Reid Rehab Centre on Carmichael Street, Georgetown.
