Court told…
TWO ex-employees of Guyana Power & Light Inc. (GPL), nabbed in a sting operation, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday, charged with obtaining money by menace. Rayon Henry, 25, of Lot 7 Princes Street, Wortmanville, and 36-year old Heston Grant (no address given) pleaded not guilty to the joint charge.
Particulars of the offence said, on June 18, with intent to defraud, they demanded $30,000 from Marvin Thomas, with intent to steal.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Peter Hugh, representing the duo, said they were employed by GPL as meter technicians.
The virtual complainant said his neighbour called to inform him that the defendants took away his meter.
Thomas said Henry left his telephone number with the same neighbour and, when he called, the defendant told him to pay $30,000 to retrieve the meter.
Thomas said he went to GPL Head Office and was instructed to go to Criminal Investigations Department (CID) where the Police arranged a meeting with him and the defendants to collect the money and they were arrested.
Each defendant was put on $75,000 bail and the case has been transferred to another Court for August 2.
