… Cougars take third place
ROSIGNOL United Football Club adorned themselves in glory last Sunday at the Blairmont Community Centre ground, when they defeated Monedderlust Football Club 3-0 to win the 2010 Berbice Football Association (BFA)-organised Coca Cola tournament.
In the third place playoff, Cougars defeated New Amsterdam United 3-2 to take that position in a tournament that can be deemed prestigious on the BFA’s calendar of events.
Monedderlust pressed forcefully through their experienced senior midfield player, Elvis Croal, and thwarted several of Rosignol’s early advances with the efforts of young defender Travis ‘Dread’ Henry in a thrilling encounter.
However, after a while it became obvious that they could not suppress the overall power of Rosignol whose attacking force was led by Olvis Mitchell, with support from Delbert Wilson in midfield and Justin Collins in defence.
A 32nd minute strike from Rosignol’s principal scorer Delroy ‘Tugi’ Fraser opened their account in the first half which ended one-nil in their favour.
The ever-present Olvis Mitchell doubled Rosignol United’s lead in the 53rd minute, after receiving a solid through pass from Wilson who manfully controlled the centre.
Out-of-form Sylvester Smith who was belated injected into the game, struck goal number three, four minutes to full time to seal things for Rosignol United.
Manager John Skeete was pleased with Rosignol’s performance and singled out custodian Roncy Caleb along with Mitchell and Fraser, who helped to make it an easy win.
Playing for third place in the first match of the double-header, Cougars F.C edged N/A United in extra time, in what can be described as the first thriller of the evening.
At the end of regulation time both teams, playing at a high level, were deadlocked on 2 goals.
Charles Williams in the 7th and Horace Roache in the 50th minute scored for Cougars, while Kelvin Joseph (55th) and Adrian ‘Garnett’ Adams (67th) booted in for N/A United.
Winston Benjamin registered his ninth goal of the tournament to break the deadlock seven minutes into extra time, to seal the victory for Cougars.
The floodlight final, which was prompted by Mr Carlton Joao of Banks DIH Limited, proved to be a great success with Berbicians turning up in their hundreds to see their top four clubs compete for the Coca Cola title.
