Police sergeant, two others, held in armed robbery

Three men, including a sergeant of police, are in custody following an armed robbery at Unity, Parika, East Bank Essequibo, on Friday night.
Police reported that at about 19:30 hrs that night, Ryan Kailass and Vijai Sirpaul of Unity, Parika, were on the roadway at Unity when a motor car without number plates drove up.

Two men, armed with a handgun and a knife, got out of the vehicle, robbed them of two cell phones, a silver chain and $22,000 in cash, got back in the vehicle and drove away.
A report was made to the police who responded promptly and intercepted the motor car along the Parika Access Road. Two masked men were seen in the back seat of the vehicle, along with the driver who was identified as a Sergeant of Police.
The two men were placed in the police vehicle as the driver was observed throwing something into the bushes. The object was retrieved by the police patrol and turned out to be a toy gun.
As a rank was about to enter the motor car with the intention of escorting the vehicle to the station, the sergeant drove away and subsequently returned to the station with the vehicle bearing number plate PJJ 1957. He was arrested.
The three men are in police custody.
Investigations are continuing.
