– Region Three councilor tells RDC meeting
THE Transport and Harbours Department ferry service between Parika and Leguan came in for severe criticism at last Wednesday’s statutory meeting of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara).
Addressing the issue of lateness and unreliability of service, People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) councilor, Amjad Ali Shaw, posited that this has resulted in a whole lot of time wasted. He stated emphatically that the old schedule should be restored given that there are adequate amount of vessels plying the Essequibo River. This call was echoed by PPP/C councilor Noubati Deowdat.
Shaw said that the current schedule has a negative impact especially on senior citizens, noting that at times the waters are very rough and pose a dangerous threat to people who are forced to use the private speedboat service.
Shaw who is a resident of Leguan reminded the meeting that the age-old schedule has worked well in the past and people, especially senior citizens have grown accustomed to it.
“As I speak Mr. Chairman, we ought to be mindful of our senior folks who are in dire straits, many of them are afraid to jump on the ferry. Lateness and unreliability coupled with fear are the talk of the day. We should therefore approach the relevant authority to bring some measure of relief to the people of Leguan” Shaw concluded.
