I would like to congratulate the Minister of Education on his strong stand against cigarette smoking by teachers, especially in schools. The smoking of cigarettes continues to be the number one killer among people of developing countries, and when teachers smoke for their students to see, they are sending the wrong message to students, because, teachers teach not only by what they say in the class room but also what they do outside the class room. The ministry of health should launch a rigorous educational program to sensitize all Guyanese about the danger of cigarette smoking, and I would like to see more social sanctions against smoking in the public, especially in restaurants, movie houses and the parks. Let us all join in this drive to rid our lives of this cancerous habit.
