THE Guyana Fire Service (GFS), on Tuesday afternoon, averted what could have developed into a major catastrophe in the main commercial area of New Amsterdam, Berbice.
The firefighters extinguished a blaze on a coconut tree aback of Melodies Restaurant on the western half of Pitt Street. Ironically, that eating house was built after the big conflagration that destroyed 13 business places in the same street eight years ago.
Property owners in the vicinity were high in praise for the quick response of the firemen minutes after being alerted.
GFS Station Officer, Kalamadeen Edoo, said the origin of the flames is being investigated.
