Residents of the Warapana community in the upper Pomeroon River are calling on officers of the Forestry Department to stop persons from cutting down trees in their area.
Reports out from Warapana, which is located some 35 miles from Charity, said persons are cutting down the trees illegally and that forestry officers who are stationed a short distance away at Arparico River Mouth need to take action to stop the destruction of the forest.
Both banks very far up the Pomeroon River have virgin forest with greenheart, mora and wallaba trees, among many other species of wood.
Many sawmillers with operations on the bank of the Pomeroon River have timber concessions in the area.
