Third Beepat Scorpions basketball tourney set for tomorrow

THE third annual Beepat Scorpions Basketball Club’s Inter-Organisation tournament will be staged tomorrow, Wednesday, May 26 (Independence Day) at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall and according to Vijay Panday, the club’s coach and coordinator of the event, over 20 teams have already registered for the one-day affair. Speaking with Chronicle Sport yesterday, Panday indicated that the tournament has been steadily growing in numbers, since its formation three years ago as a means to raise funds for his club, and the overwhelming support shown this year has come as no surprise.
Last year, former National captain and point guard cum-FIBA-referee, Lugard Mohan, rolled back the years when he led the Guyana Power and Light Limited to championship honours over Barama and it was stated that both teams have already signalled their interest in participating this year as well.
“For sure this year will be the biggest,” Panday said, adding “you see, the tournament is always fun and family-oriented because we see employers and so on coming out to support their workers. Also, the games are very competitive and good basketball is seen so it will be a good day on Wednesday (tomorrow).”
Panday also pointed out that this time around, they plan on starting promptly at 09:30 h because they “don’t want a repeat of last year where we started late because teams turned up and we had plenty breaks; this time we (are) starting on time and we (are) issuing walkovers and so on. So we (are) asking teams to please be on time.”
Giftland OfficeMax, Ansa McAl and Beepats are among the sponsors of the tournament which will also see participation from a strong media side.
